The New York State Office of Mental Health and Allen Communication Earn a Communicator Award for Their Tobacco Cessation Course

Communicator Award - Web Based TrainingSalt Lake City (June 4, 2013) – The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH), NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene (RFMH), in partnership with the Fund for Public Health in New York and along with Allen Communication have earned an Interactive Communicator Award of Distinction for their Tobacco Cessation training courses. The web based training modules provide mental health professionals, psychiatrists, and psychiatric prescribers with up-to-date, evidence-based information and clinical skills to motivate and assist clients with tobacco use in order to improve their health and enhance their recovery.

The Communicator Awards are judged and overseen by the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA), an organization of leading professionals of the visual arts dedicated to embracing progress and the evolving nature of traditional and interactive media. The Communicator Awards is the largest and most competitive awards program honoring the creative excellence for communications professionals; over 6000 entries were received from across the world.

The award winning training was developed after the Office of Mental Health (OMH) in New York State identified tobacco cessation treatment as a major strategy that can improve health and reduce the chronic medical illnesses and early death that are prevalent among people who live with serious mental illness.

“Evidence supports that tobacco dependence treatment for people with serious mental illness is most effective when provided in an integrated fashion by mental health professionals,” said Gregory A. Miller, MD, MBA, Medical Director of Adult Services at NYS OMH. “These new training modules deliver engaging, industry-leading instructional design that train mental health professionals in just such a model.”

“It is especially gratifying to be able to partner with these organizations to help improve communities and the quality of life for the people within these communities,” said Ron Zamir, CEO of Allen. “Knowing the skills in this training will result in real improvements in the health and wellness of people struggling with addiction and mental health issues is rewarding and the best possible application of the tremendous skills of our team.”
