Online training modules help mental health professionals develop skills to assist those who want to quit tobacco use in order to improve health and enhance recovery.
Salt Lake City (September 10, 2012) – Almost half of the cigarettes smoked in the United States are consumed by people with serious mental illness and substance use disorders. The Office of Mental Health (OMH) in New York has identified tobacco cessation treatment as a major strategy that can improve health and reduce the chronic medical illnesses and early death that are prevalent among people who live with serious mental illness.
The latest collaboration between OMH, the NYC Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene, RFMH and Allen Communication Learning Services is the development of training modules that will provide mental health professionals, psychiatrists, and psychiatric prescribers with up-to-date, evidence-based information and clinical skills to motivate and assist clients with tobacco use in order to improve their health and enhance their recovery.
“Evidence supports that tobacco dependence treatment for people with serious mental illness is most effective when provided in an integrated fashion by mental health professionals. ” said Gregory A. Miller, MD MBA, Medical Director, Adult Service at NYS OMH. These new training modules deliver engaging, industry-leading instructional design that train mental health professionals in just such a model.
At AllenComm our focus has always been to harness the best in training design and delivery to impact learners in positive ways,” said Ron Zamir, CEO of AllenComm. “Knowing the skills this training will impart on learners will result in real improvement in the health and wellness of people struggling with addiction and mental health issues is rewarding, and the best possible application of the tremendous skills of our team.”
